Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is a border province in the northwest of China It has a typical arid or semi-arid climate zone, and has excellent landscape and climate conditions for walnut production.
For more than a thousand years, the people of Xinjiang have cultivated walnut trees. In Yecheng (Kargilik) County, Xinjiang, there are over a hundred ancient walnut trees, which are more than 500 years old.
Hotan, Xinjiang is called “The Hometown of Walnuts” since many houses of the local farmers are surrounded by walnut trees. These are not only financially beneficial for them, but also act as wind breakers and sand blockers, offering a cool and green environment.
Adequate irrigation water and irrigation facilities, rich resources in walnut cultivars, mature techniques for supporting the walnut cultivation, etc. Especially in the 21st century, the walnut plantation industry in Xinjiang has entered a period of rapid development with 2~3×104 ha planted per annum under the implementation of the strategy of Developing the Distinctive Fruit Industry.
By the end of 2022, the walnut planted area in Xinjiang reached 2.65×105 ha, a bearing area of 1.52×105 ha, an annual output walnut 1.86×105 t, accounting for 17.51% of the national walnut (1.06×106t) of the total output. Xinjiang has become the top one walnut producing areas in China.
There are many varieties of walnuts in the market, such as Paper Shell Walnuts Xinjiang 185 (Xin185), Thin-Shelled Walnuts Xinjiang 33 (Xin33), Xiner, Xin2, Xingfu, and Precocity Walnuts. Green-husk walnuts, peeled fresh walnuts and dried walnuts are all available.
